PROLOGUE:
When I was sharing my blog in one of those Whatsapp groups (street friends'group- the primary usage of which is to pull each other's legs), the following conversation came up.
Sai: Hey! Look @ Maha, writing blog and all ! @ Ash- Even you are quite good at English and update nice and lengthy statuses on FB. Why don't you also start your blog?
(My mind voice : Seriously ? If you get a lot of likes on your statuses , you get qualified to write articles and start a blog? Great! Let's see how Ash responds!)
Ash: Blog is for vetti people da (no offence) . I have a photography page , there are enough fans right now!
(@ this point I am unable to hold it anymore )
Me : And about writers being perceived as "vetti". Stay tuned to my blog.. To get an answer
Ash: Dare not, make a post outta my idea!
Me : Don't worry will give you due credits! But when it comes to general misconception I guess I have a moral obligation to clarify them if I can.
Ash : It ain't a misconception , it's just that you can't be a gamechanger being a blog writer that easily , it's pretty much about you and how you think about stuff.
Me : About writing is / isn't a game changer.. Hang on!
So, here I am keeping up my promise! Ash all credits to you! :)
And hopefully you will find a different perspective here! :)
Dedicated with love to
Those who don't appreciate Writing as an Art!
I have presumed , that by game- changing , my friend refers to changing the world (contributing to the society)
Approach 1 : Why is not writing game-changing?
Literature has somehow seem to have lost it's glow in the perceptions of people these days - specially in that of the youth! Whilst most hobbies including drug addiction is termed 'çool' , reading literature or writing is just 'nerdy'! The famous quote "Pen is mightier than sword", probably do no mean much to the majority today! While I was pondering about this sort of attitude , it occurred to me that this situation may have risen to the following facts :
- We are forced to study books (academics) , in our childhood and adolescence. So it is psychologically probable to have an aversion to the same.
- As humans, we easily undermine the power of words. When most of us can agree on the point that character is the most distinguishing factor of a human being, most of us fail to recognize the flow chain
Thoughts -> Words -> Actions -> Habits -> Character.
And our thoughts are only limited by our perception. Perception again depends upon exposure. And one of the ways of gaining exposure is reading. - Most people expect results / rewards immediately and literature is one field which involves a lot of patience. One needs to be patient enough to capture vivid details and transform them into a wonderful piece of writing. Then one needs to wait for the writing to reach the audience and above all wait for the audience to be affected by it and respond. One does not simply change their lifestyle after reading a good book! On the other hand, when you have read some powerful words, they will have an impact over your thought process and certainly be life-changing, may not be right now! But someday!
Having mentioned these, it is quite understandable for today's society (majority) , to make a quick-decision to undermine the habit of reading and writing! But I don't think it is okay to continue doing the same in a long run after knowing and understanding the merits of literature. Here I do not wish to elaborate on the merits of literature, for I would end up writing a book on it, rather than a post. But to be short, here you go!
We know history as we have 'read' it!
We use science as we have 'read' it!
We calculate everything, as we have 'read' Math!
We are in the electronic age of virtual things, as we have read 'IT'!
We make money, as we have 'read' about how to make!
We know our bodies, for we have 'read' biology!
We know our mind, for we have 'read' psychology!
We know each other , for we can 'communicate through languages'!
So, its only words and words are all we have!
If not for literature, we would not have evolved!
For any advancement in any field, communication has always been the key! Since it has always been in the background probably it has gone unnoticed!
And for specifically blog writers.. we type , instead of the traditional write.. but the essence is the same! Looking at how much technology has penetrated into our lives, it only makes sense to adapt! So here we are, trying to offer to the world a different perspective and get from the world , the same!
Approach 2: What exactly is game-changing?
Most of us , have our own prejudices - from profession to hobby!
We think doctors contribute more to the society than the sweepers and hence the social respect and status for each profession!
We assume playing cricket to be an awesome hobby (at least in India, it is the coolest way to pass time) , while reading novel is just nerdy!
Given an opportunity to ponder about why these prejudices - do we have a logical answer? Its an apparent no! One profession / hobby being perceived as better than other is just a relativity and is subjective to so many factors like time period, place, etc. This leads us to one logical conclusion-
There is no the best profession , nor hobby!
So, to argue that doctors are better than engineers or soldiers or farmers or sweepers , do not make any real sense.
One can't really specify that one profession has contributed more to the world than another , for all these professions exist due to their importance and inevitability in the world!
Similarly claiming that one hobby to be more productive to the self and the society when compared to another is logic-less and meaning-less!
I really do not see why photography, numismatics or traveling should be a better hobby than reading!
Logically I can't say why one should be arguing that a scientist is better than a writer , as the scientist does a game-changing work!
EPILOGUE :
Humans were judgmental, are judgmental and will be judgmental. It is inevitable.
But let us develop the maturity to accept that we have our own prejudices and hence our choices are not in any way superior to others.
The idea of this article is not to establish the 'supremacy' of writing or writers! On the contrary, it is to prove to those willing readers that no profession / art is greater than another! There is a reason why all of them co-exist!
Most / all of the problems that exist in today's society are borne out of the prejudices and myopic nature of human beings.Let us be more accommodating in our views henceforth and let-go of the baseless comparisons that we keep making throughout our lives!
